Fluted fronts for IKEA - 4 styles: Linea, Wiedeń, Pasmo, Rytm

Fluted fronts have returned to kitchens as one of the strongest trends of the last two years. After years of smooth surfaces dominating, customers once again want texture, shadow, and rhythm on their cabinet doors. IKEA only has one milled front in its catalog (BODBYN), so anyone wanting something more distinctive turns to custom manufacturers.

At ogony.pl, we offer four fluted styles for IKEA METOD and FAKTUM systems: Linea, Wiedeń, Pasmo, and Rytm. Each features a different milling rhythm, depth, and groove direction. In this guide, I'll show you how they differ, which kitchens they suit, and which colors work best with each.

What is a fluted front and why do IKEA customers want them

A fluted front is a cabinet door with a milled pattern on its surface – most often in the form of parallel vertical or horizontal grooves. Depending on the depth and spacing of the milling, the effect can be subtle (a play of light) or strong (a distinct relief).

Three things contribute to the popularity of fluted fronts:

  • Texture instead of color - a color-neutral kitchen gains character purely through its surface
  • Light - the flutes catch shadow and light differently at various times of day, making the kitchen "visually alive"
  • Classic vs. modern mix - Shaker, Linea, and Wiedeń nod to tradition, while Rytm and Pasmo lean towards contemporary design

At IKEA, the only textured front (BODBYN) has horizontal grooves and is available in two colors. A custom manufacturer offers four different styles + a full palette of Farrow & Ball, RAL, and NCS colors.

Linea - classic 12 mm frame

Linea is our most recognizable style. The front has a milled 12 mm wide frame around its perimeter, revealing a smooth inner surface. This classic Parisian-style finish is subtle, timeless, and fits well in both modern kitchens and bistro-inspired designs.

  • Milling depth: 4 mm
  • Frame width: 12 mm
  • Direction: four sides (frame)
  • Best suited for: minimalist kitchens, apartments in old buildings, kitchens with an island as an accent
  • Bestselling colors: Cornforth White, Pavilion Gray, Down Pipe (Farrow & Ball)

Linea works excellently in a semi-matte lacquer – the matteness deepens the frame's shadow. In gloss, the front looks more technical, less "artisanal."

Wiedeń - horizontal milling in Bodbyn style

Wiedeń is our answer to the popular IKEA BODBYN, but with an important distinction. The milling is softer, and the depth of the grooves is twice as great – creating a more distinct shadow and a stronger 3D effect. This front is for those who want BODBYN but in colors that IKEA doesn't offer (Hague Blue, Stiffkey Blue, Cooking Apple Green, Calke Green).

  • Milling depth: 6-8 mm
  • Direction: horizontal in one wide central zone
  • Best suited for: classic kitchens, colorful kitchens, kitchens with a wooden countertop
  • Bestselling colors: Hague Blue, Stiffkey Blue, Cooking Apple Green

Wiedeń works best in intense Farrow & Ball colors – the milling then creates a dramatic light and shadow contrast that catches the eye of anyone entering the kitchen.

Pasmo - vertical strips in Shaker style

Pasmo features vertical, parallel flutes running the entire height of the front. Each flute is 8 mm wide, with an 8 mm gap between them – the effect is a rhythmic surface with a strong vertical accent. Visually, the front "elongates" the cabinet, making it particularly effective on low doors (base cabinets).

  • Milling depth: 5 mm
  • Flute width: 8 mm
  • Spacing: 8 mm
  • Direction: vertical, full height
  • Best suited for: modern kitchens, apartments with low ceilings (height-enhancing effect), islands

Pasmo is a stronger accent than Linea or Wiedeń. It works better solo than mixed with classic styles – in one kitchen, it creates a cohesive, distinctive look.

Rytm - rhythmic horizontal grooves with a 3D effect

Rytm is our proposal for a repeating, geometric pattern. Short horizontal flutes at equal intervals create a 3D effect that looks like hand-carved wood relief. The front has a strong, noticeable finish – it's not a delicate accent, but a central element of the kitchen.

  • Milling depth: 6 mm
  • Flute height: 12 mm
  • Spacing: 12 mm
  • Direction: horizontal, parallel strips across the entire width
  • Best suited for: kitchens with strong character, dark colors, contrast with light cabinetry

Rytm in a light beige (e.g., School House White) is subtle, while in Down Pipe or Railings black, it's dramatic. This is a good front for those who want a kitchen "to look at," not just to cook in.

In practice, 60% of customers choose Linea (versatile), 25% Wiedeń (classic with character), and the remaining 15% is split between Pasmo and Rytm.

Which colors best complement fluted fronts

General rule: the deeper the milling, the less intense the color. A strong relief (Rytm, Pasmo) in a bright red is overwhelming. The same relief in a calm beige or gray provides just the right amount.

Combinations that work in 90% of our projects:

  • Linea + Cornforth White / Pavilion Gray - subtlety, classic, Scandinavian kitchens
  • Linea + Down Pipe / Railings - dramatic dark kitchen without overstatement
  • Wiedeń + Hague Blue / Stiffkey Blue - navy with horizontal flutes = ogony.pl signature
  • Wiedeń + Cooking Apple Green / Calke Green - Farrow & Ball green, most often in 12-18 m² kitchens
  • Pasmo + Strong White / School House White - modern minimalism
  • Rytm + Down Pipe / Studio Green - strong color + strong relief = classic "statement kitchen"

Colors are included in the price - the entire Farrow & Ball, RAL, and NCS palette at no extra charge. A front sample (89 PLN, deducted from the order) allows you to check how a specific color looks on the milling in the real light of your home.

FAQ - frequently asked questions

Are fluted fronts harder to keep clean than smooth ones? A little more demanding - dust settles in the flutes. In practice, it's enough to vacuum the flutes once every 2-3 weeks with a furniture brush (or a toothbrush for deeper flutes like Rytm). Daily cleaning is the same as for smooth fronts - with a damp cloth.

Does fluting affect the price of the front? Milling is included in the product price - Linea, Wiedeń, Pasmo, and Rytm have the same per m² rate as smooth fronts. 4 real quotes for typical IKEA kitchens show the actual budget range.

Do fluted fronts fit FAKTUM, or only METOD? They fit both systems. We make them in FAKTUM dimensions (up to 2014) and METOD dimensions (from 2014). Original IKEA hinges - no modification of the cabinet carcass. If you don't know which system you have, check the hinges or send a photo to kontakt@ogony.pl.

Can I order a mix - some smooth, some fluted in one kitchen? Yes, this is a common choice for customers. A typical mix: Wiedeń or Linea base cabinets (character at eye level), smooth wall cabinets (calming the composition). Or vice versa - smooth base, fluted wall cabinets. We do it in one order, with one lead time.

Can a fluted front be ordered without hinge drillings? Yes. The standard is drillings for original IKEA hinges, but if you have a non-standard hinge system (e.g., you have old BLUM hinges left after a renovation), you order the front without drillings and drill them yourself or have an installer do it.

How long does it take to fulfill an order for fluted fronts? Standard is 6 weeks from acceptance of the quote and payment. Milling is part of the production process - it does not extend the time compared to smooth fronts. Each front is made to specific dimensions; we do not sell from stock.

Does the front sample show the milling? A standard sample shows the material and lacquer finish, but not the specific milling pattern. For those who want to see the milling before ordering, we order a dedicated sample of the chosen style. Write to kontakt@ogony.pl or order a standard sample as a starting point.
