Grooved Fronts for IKEA - 4 Styles: Linea, Wiedeń, Pasmo, Rytm
Grooved fronts have returned to kitchens as one of the strongest trends of the last two years. After years of dominance by smooth surfaces, customers once again want texture, shadow, and rhythm on their cabinet doors. IKEA only has one milled front in its catalog (BODBYN), so anyone who wants something more distinctive turns to custom manufacturers.
At ogony.pl, we offer four grooved styles for IKEA METOD and FAKTUM systems: Linea, Wiedeń, Pasmo, and Rytm. Each has a different groove rhythm, depth, and direction of fluting. In this guide, I'll show you how they differ, which kitchens they suit, and which colors work best with each.
What is a grooved front and why do IKEA customers want them?
A grooved front is a cabinet door with a milled pattern on its surface – most commonly in the form of parallel vertical or horizontal fluting. Depending on the depth and spacing of the grooves, the effect can be subtle (a play of light) or strong (a distinct relief).
Three things determine the popularity of grooved fronts:
- Texture instead of color - a color-neutral kitchen gains character through the surface itself.
- Light - the grooves catch shadow and light differently at every time of day, making the kitchen visually "alive."
- Classic vs. modern mix - Shaker, Linea, and Wiedeń reference tradition, while Rytm and Pasmo lean towards contemporary design.
At IKEA, the only textured front (BODBYN) has horizontal fluting and is available in two colors. A custom manufacturer offers four different styles + a full palette from Farrow & Ball, RAL, and NCS.
Linea - classic 12 mm frame
Linea is our most recognizable style. The front has a milled frame 12 mm wide around the perimeter, which reveals a smooth inner surface. This is a classic Parisian-style finish – subtle, timeless, and fits well in both modern kitchens and bistro settings.
- Groove depth: 4 mm
- Frame width: 12 mm
- Direction: four sides (frame)
- Best suited for: minimalist kitchens, apartments in old buildings, kitchens with an island as an accent.
- Bestselling colors: Cornforth White, Pavilion Gray, Down Pipe (Farrow & Ball)
Linea works excellently with semi-matte lacquer – the matte finish deepens the frame's shadow. In gloss, the front looks more technical, less "crafty."
Wiedeń - horizontal milling in the Bodbyn style
Wiedeń is our answer to the popular IKEA BODBYN, but with an important difference. The milling is softer, and the groove depth is twice as great – which creates a more distinct shadow and a stronger 3D effect. This is a front for people who want BODBYN but in colors that IKEA doesn't offer (Hague Blue, Stiffkey Blue, Cooking Apple Green, Calke Green).
- Groove depth: 6-8 mm
- Direction: horizontal in one wide central zone
- Best suited for: classic kitchens, colorful kitchens, kitchens with wooden countertops.
- Bestselling colors: Hague Blue, Stiffkey Blue, Cooking Apple Green
Wiedeń works best with intense Farrow & Ball colors – the groove then creates a dramatic contrast of light and shadow that catches the eye of anyone entering the kitchen.
Pasmo - vertical stripes in the Shaker style
Pasmo features vertical, parallel grooves running the entire height of the front. Each groove is 8 mm wide, and the spacing between grooves is also 8 mm – the effect is a rhythmic surface with a strong vertical accent. Visually, the front "elongates" the cabinet, so it works particularly well on low doors (base cabinets).
- Groove depth: 5 mm
- Groove width: 8 mm
- Spacing: 8 mm
- Direction: vertical, full height
- Best suited for: modern kitchens, apartments with low ceilings (height effect), islands.
Pasmo is a stronger accent than Linea or Wiedeń. It works better solo than mixed with classic styles – in one kitchen, it gives a coherent, characterful look.
Rytm - rhythmic horizontal fluting with a 3D effect
Rytm is our proposal for a repeatable, geometric pattern. Short horizontal grooves at even intervals create a 3D effect that looks like hand-carved wood relief. The front has a strong, noticeable finish – it's not a delicate accent, but a central element of the kitchen.
- Groove depth: 6 mm
- Groove height: 12 mm
- Spacing: 12 mm
- Direction: horizontal, parallel stripes across the entire width
- Best suited for: kitchens with a strong character, dark colors, contrast with light cabinetry.
Rytm in a light beige (e.g., School House White) works subtly, in Down Pipe or Railings black – dramatically. This is a good front for people who want a kitchen "to look at," not just for cooking.

In practice, 60% of customers choose Linea (universal), 25% Wiedeń (classic with character), and the remaining 15% is split between Pasmo and Rytm.
Which colors best complement grooved fronts?
General rule: the deeper the groove, the less intense the color. A strong relief (Rytm, Pasmo) in bright red overloads the eye. The same relief in a calm beige or gray provides just enough.
Pairs that work in 90% of our projects:
- Linea + Cornforth White / Pavilion Gray - subtlety, classic, Scandinavian kitchens
- Linea + Down Pipe / Railings - dramatic dark kitchen without overkill
- Wiedeń + Hague Blue / Stiffkey Blue - navy blue with horizontal grooves = ogony.pl signature
- Wiedeń + Cooking Apple Green / Calke Green - Farrow & Ball green, most often in kitchens 12-18 m²
- Pasmo + Strong White / School House White - modern minimalism
- Rytm + Down Pipe / Studio Green - strong color + strong relief = classic "statement kitchen"
Colors are included in the price - the entire Farrow & Ball, RAL, and NCS palette with no extra charges. A front sample (deducted from the production order with the SAMPLE code) allows you to check how a specific color looks on the groove in the real light of your home.
FAQ - frequently asked questions
Are grooved fronts harder to clean than smooth ones?
A little more demanding - dust settles in the grooves. In practice, it's enough to vacuum the grooves once every 2-3 weeks with a furniture brush (or a toothbrush for deeper grooves like Rytm). Daily, they are wiped just like smooth fronts - with a damp cloth.
Does grooving affect the price of the front?
Milling is included in the product price - Linea, Wiedeń, Pasmo, and Rytm have the same per m² rate as smooth fronts. 4 real quotes for typical IKEA kitchens show the actual budget range.
Do grooved fronts fit FAKTUM, or only METOD?
They fit both systems. We make them in FAKTUM dimensions (up to 2014) and METOD (from 2014). Original IKEA hinges - no cabinet modifications. If you don't know which system you have, check the hinges or send a photo to kontakt@ogony.pl.
Can I order a mix - some smooth, some grooved in one kitchen?
Yes, this is a common choice for customers. A typical mix: lower cabinets Wiedeń or Linea (character at eye level), upper smooth (calming the composition). Or vice versa - smooth lowers, grooved uppers. We process it in one order, with one lead time.
Can a grooved front be ordered without hinge drillings?
Yes. The standard is drillings for original IKEA hinges, but if you have a non-standard hinge system (e.g., you have old BLUM hinges left after a renovation), you order the front without drillings and drill them yourself or have an installer do it.
How long does it take to fulfill an order for grooved fronts?
Standard is 7 weeks from quote acceptance and payment. Milling is part of the production process - it does not extend the time compared to smooth fronts. Each front is made to specific dimensions; we do not sell from stock.
Does the front sample show the grooving?
A standard sample shows the material and lacquer finish, but not a specific grooving pattern. For people who want to see the grooving before ordering - we order a dedicated sample of the chosen style. Write to kontakt@ogony.pl or order a standard sample to start.
