Custom IKEA Fronts - When the Catalogue Isn't Enough and What to Do Instead

IKEA kitchens are standard - cabinet widths of 40, 60 or 80 cm, and front heights of 80, 100 or 140 cm. This works in 80% of homes. In the remaining 20%, the kitchen might have a sloped ceiling under a staircase, a 47 cm alcove, a 90 cm island countertop, a low ceiling, or an unusual corner cabinet. In such cases, standard IKEA fronts no longer fit.

In this article, you will find typical scenarios where IKEA fronts are insufficient, along with specific ways to order custom-sized fronts - what exactly to specify in your order, how much "custom" costs compared to standard, and what we don't even do on a custom basis.

When IKEA Catalogue Fronts No Longer Fit

Six typical scenarios from our practice at ogony.pl. If you recognize any of these in your situation, custom fronts are practically the only option.

  1. Slope under stairs - a kitchen in an apartment with an attic or under stairs. A standard 60×80 cm front will not fit under a 70 cm high slope.
  2. Alcove of unusual width - an alcove of 47 cm, 53 cm, or 67 cm. IKEA offers 40, 60, 80 cm, and nothing in between.
  3. Kitchen island - island side panels are usually 88-92 cm high. IKEA standard is 80 cm. Above 88 cm, you need to join two fronts or order one custom-sized.
  4. Low ceiling - if the ceiling is 240 cm and the floor is under a standard countertop, the upper fronts are cut short. Standard heights like 60×80 or 60×100 cm do not fit.
  5. Small kitchen in an old building - cabinets 47-58 cm wide, which IKEA does not sell. Or a very low cabinet, 40 cm high.
  6. Front with drillings for specific appliances - e.g., a built-in coffee machine, a microwave with side-opening doors, or non-IKEA appliances.

In all these cases, we have one answer: a custom front, down to the millimeter. The standard drilling for hinges is universal (ø 35 mm depth 13 mm, spacing 96 mm), so the front fits IKEA hinges regardless of whether it is 53 cm or 60 cm wide.

What exactly you order "custom"

A "custom" front at ogony.pl is a regular catalogue front, but in dimensions you specify – not from the standard IKEA list. Everything else (material, design, color, finish) is the same as for standard fronts.

Four decisions when ordering custom:

  1. Dimensions to the millimeter. You measure the IKEA cabinet (or non-standard cabinet) from edge to edge and provide the exact number of millimeters. The production tolerance at ogony.pl is ±1 mm.
  2. Material - lacquered, natural veneer, or birch plywood. Each material is available custom-sized without an extra charge for non-standardization.
  3. Front design - all our designs are available in unusual dimensions: Smooth, Linea, Rytm, Pasmo, Vienna, Vitryna, Milled Handle, Round, Grip.
  4. Color - Farrow & Ball, NCS, RAL included in the price. Custom matching to any color chart upon request.

Important: "custom" does not mean "more expensive." The price per m² is the same for a standard 60×80 cm front and a non-standard 47×72 cm front. The price increases linearly with the surface area - there is no penalty for "non-standard" dimensions. The configurator on ogony.pl calculates the exact price for every dimension.

What we won't even do on a custom basis

A list of things we don't do, even with custom orders - so you don't waste time asking questions to which the answer is "no."

  • Fronts with mounting other than the European furniture standard. Drilling ø 35 mm, depth 13 mm, spacing 96 mm is the standard. If you have an exotic closing system (rare Asian hinges, custom magnets), we are not the right fit.
  • Fronts for systems other than IKEA. We make fronts for METOD, FAKTUM, PAX, BESTÅ, PLATSA. We do not compete with manufacturers for Häcker, Nobilia, Schmidt - they have different cabinet carcasses and different mountings.
  • Reproductive designs (e.g., exactly Bodbyn with IKEA's bevel). We create our own designs - classic framed (Vienna) and milled (Linea, Rytm, Pasmo) - but we do not copy IKEA or competitor designs 1:1.
  • Fronts with a thickness other than 19 mm. The standard Egger MDF is 19 mm. Other thicknesses (16 mm, 22 mm, 25 mm) require a different production line, and we do not support them.
  • Fronts with a rounding radius outside the CNC standard. Standard radii are R200, R240. Larger or smaller radii are available upon request, but not always possible.
  • Lacquered fronts using technology other than polyurethane. We do not do enameling, thermosetting lacquer, or foil wrapping.

Three real "custom" scenarios - what it looks like in practice

Scenario 1 - kitchen with a sloped ceiling under the stairs

In 2025, a client ordered kitchen fronts for an apartment with an attic - the built-in unit had 4 fronts under a 70-degree slope, each with a different height from 32 cm to 71 cm. IKEA had no such options. The client ordered 4 Linea fronts in semi-matt lacquer, color Pavilion Gray Farrow & Ball, with dimensions specified to the millimeter. Delivery took 7 weeks, and the client installed them themselves (following instructions for a standard METOD).

Scenario 2 - kitchen island 92 cm

In 2024, a client ordered a custom kitchen with an island 92 cm high (4 cm higher than the standard 88 cm). The island's side panels were 92×60 cm, made of Korzeń Muskato veneer, with double-sided lacquer (panels visible from both sides - 20% surcharge). The order also included 220 cm long plinths and island cabinet door fronts.

Scenario 3 - small kitchen in an old building

An apartment from the 1960s - a 5 m² kitchen with unusual cabinet dimensions. The client had custom carcasses (made by a carpenter previously) with widths of 47 and 53 cm. Custom-sized fronts were ordered in both widths, Smooth design in white lacquer NCS S 0500-N. Completion in 7 weeks, delivery by courier (Tricity + Olsztyn).

In all three scenarios, the process was the same as for standard fronts: configurator, front sample, PDF quote, 7 weeks production. "Custom" at ogony.pl is not a different product - it's the same product, just with different measurements.

A complete guide to IKEA systems and their standard dimensions can be found in our article IKEA kitchen fronts - FAKTUM and METOD. Order a front sample to see the material and color live - the amount is deducted from the production order.

FAQ - frequently asked questions

Does a custom front cost more than a standard one? No - the price per m² is the same. The price increases linearly with the surface area; there is no extra charge for "unusual" dimensions. A 47×72 cm front costs proportionally to its area, just like a standard 60×80 cm one.

What is the dimensional tolerance for a custom front? ±1 mm. This is the CNC standard - cut fronts match the dimensions to the millimeter. Measure the cabinet carefully, preferably three times in different places (top-middle-bottom), as old IKEA cabinets can have minor deviations.

Can I order one custom front to test before ordering the whole kitchen? Yes - we make single fronts with no minimum order. We also recommend a front sample as a quicker and cheaper way to test material and color.

How much can I deviate from the standard? For a single front, widths from 30-120 cm, heights from 30-220 cm. Above 220 cm in height, the front is two-part (e.g., an island or a tall display cabinet). Above 120 cm in width, the front starts to become mechanically unstable.

Are the hinge drillings standard? Yes - ø 35 mm depth 13 mm, 96 mm from the edge. Compatible with all hinges in IKEA systems (UTRUSTA for METOD/PAX/BESTÅ, metal base for FAKTUM). You can order a front without drillings (e.g., a dishwasher front) - the installation team will drill them later according to the dishwasher model.

Do you ship custom fronts to all of the EU? Yes. International shipping is approximately 99 EUR, with service in English. We most often serve clients from Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and France.

What is the lead time for custom fronts? 7 weeks from payment receipt - the same as for standard fronts. Plus 1-2 weeks for measurement, sampling, and client decision.
